I know: rules are meant to be broken. But I'm sadly not much of a rule-breaker when it comes to dressing for the seasons. So, you can imagine my unease while attending my sorority's new member initiation this past weekend - a ritual requiring that we wear white. In November.

Until a recent trip to Forever 21 (where else?), all of my white dresses practically screamed "Easter!" or "high school graduation!"(seriously.) That is, until I found this pretty lace frock:

Of course, it's not online. Bought it for something like $20...

...paired with this blazer (also Forever 21)...

...add some polka-dot tights...

...with some black suede boots like these (mine are DVF purchased from Gilt).

It's safe to say that I'm practically salivating over the new line of bedding by Jonathan Adler. He's done it again! Available in a rainbow of colors and a multitude of patterns, the new "happy chic" bedding is certainly dreamy. ...no, not me. I just purchased my oh-so-pretty bridesmaid dress for one of my best friend's weddings! She's tying the knot on Memorial Day weekend next spring and I could not be more excited for her. It was a tough decision, one that required a 45 minute pro-con-pro session on the phone with my mom, but I chose the Nanine over the Selma and the Bow Monde. Can't wait for it to arrive! And in the meantime, I'm already dressing it up for future occasions after Lilly's big day. (I'm determined to wear this more than once!)

I first spotted the fabulous work of Laura Zindel while paging through my beloved Garden & Gun. Mrs. Zindel's handmade ceramics come to life in a 1778 farmhouse located in Guilford, Vermont. Lucky me, this evening Bikram Choudhury spoke on my campus! I rushed out of recruitment practice and made it (about 30 minutes before he started, apparently he's always late) in time to hear the infamous and controversial Bikram speak about yoga, life, India, etc. While I love to attend the occasional Bikram Yoga class, I'll admit that I'm a little skeptical of some of his preachings. I mean, the man said, "What's the best kind of food? No food." He's got to be a little off his rocker.

With a nickname like "The Bill Gates of Yoga," you know Bikram has the cash to fund a pretty absurd wardrobe. Nonetheless, I was still surprised to see him wearing these Yves Saint Laurent Leopard Print Boots.

Unfortunately, I left my camera at home, but I was relieved when someone else asked about his shoes during the questions segment! He claims he got them on sale, but we all know he can spare the $795. His custom suit on the other hand, was allegedly a mere $15.00 and made of silk that he purchased in Soeul, Korea. Bikram's ensemble was completed with a white fedora and a brightly colored tie and pocket square. Regardless of his philosophy, he was quite the entertainer!

Southern Libations

Kick back, relax, and rejoice that you're not braving the elements at the Derby this weekend! Put on that outrageous hat, plop down in front of the TV, and celebrate with a mint julep:

1/3 cup water
2/3 cup sugar, plus more for garnish
3 bunches mint
1 bottle Southern whisky
1 egg white
Mint or lavender sprigs, for garnish

Directions

Make a mint flavored simple syrup by boiling water and sugar with two bunches of roughly torn and bruised mint in large sauce pot. Boil just until the sugar dissolves completely. Cool and strain the mint out of mixture.

Add bottle of whisky to the infusion. Stuff the empty whisky bottle with last bunch of fresh mint leaves and fill with the simple syrup/whiskey mixture.

Cap and put in freezer overnight. It will freeze to a slushy consistency for serving.

Glasses: dip the rim of each glass in egg white, then in sugar for a frosted appearance and chill. Fill with mint julep mixture straight from the frozen bottle and garnish with a mint or lavender sprig.

Here are just a few things that have been brightening my days as of late:

Standing my ground as [one of] J. Crew's best consumers, I couldn't resist their tempting selection of Essie nail polish as I neared the register (with my two on-sale tops in hand!). I quickly swiped my thumb with the sample of "Punchy Pink" and immediately wondered how I'd been living all of my life without it. What's another $8.00, right?

verdict: I love the shocking neon pink (think highlighter--much brighter than as pictured). I have to admit: this was my first venture away from OPI and I was not impressed by the consistency and application of Essie. I was pleasantly surprised by the matte finish, although my boyfriend noted that my nails look as if they were painted with Wite-Out. Some strange Punchy Pink Wite-Out, that must be. Well, I love it. And that's what's important, right? Now, I'm trying to convince myself this is an appropriate hue for my internship interview on Tuesday...

next: new beverage

Lured in by a taunting Buy One Get One coupon from Whole Foods, I purchased a 4-pack of Steaz [zero calorie] Sparkling Green Tea. (I really am a sucker for these marketing ploys--nail polish by the register, "coupons," etc.) My two flavors of choice? Blueberry pomegranate and Black cherry. I didn't look at the nutritional info until I started sipping an ice-cold blueberry pomegranate, and I can safely say I'll be splurging on these naturally sweetened teas again! These babies pack a whopping 500% of your daily B6, 833% of your daily B12, 100% of your daily folic acid, and 20% of your daily vitamin C. And, most importantly, they taste great!

I can't wait to try the other flavors--Orange, Raspberry, Lemon Lime, Rootbeer....Mmm, tastes like summer!

My initial attempt at this whole blogging thing was over before Ellen and Barack could finish dancing.

But after lurk-lurk-lurking away for months, I think I'm ready to commit.

If you happened to stumble upon my floundering little blog, you should know:

I'm a junior at a small liberal arts college in the South

I thrive off of a well-balanced, fairly simple, and mostly inexpensive diet

....which saves some money for shopping.

Please, do feel free to jump aboard! I hope I will be able to offer a somewhat different perspective on many facets of simply being alive. If nothing else, I hope to at least return some of the positive encouragement and helpful information that the blogging community has already given me.

I have a confession to make.

I have an extreme obsession with:

Nutella.

While the jar recommends toast, bagels, croissants, etc., I prefer slices of bananas and fuji apples to accompany my nutella. Definitely the most satisfying and pseudo-healthy dessert I've encountered in quite some time. Although I also enjoy it in gelato from here or the occasional crepe in France. Hey, a girl can dream, right?!
